Double sided tape– a topic that I encounter every day. I often hear from new partners that they are interested indouble sided tape, but their understanding of the real market, needs and, importantly, selection criteria is often... rather superficial. It’s like, “Well, you need double-sided tape.” And here we are digging, figuring it out, and they have already decided that the main thing is the price. This, of course, is also important, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Recently I came across a case where a client simply did not have enough good adhesive tape to assemble large-sized furniture - they thought we’d save money, bought a cheap one, and then had to redo the entire batch. It is clear that this is his mistake, but how to convince him of the need for better quality material is not an easy task.
The first thing to understand is that there is no single 'core buyer'. There is a whole spectrum. If we talk about the largest segments, I would highlight several:furniture industry, electronics, packagingandproduction of advertising materials. Each of them has its own specific requirements. In the furniture industry, for example, the strength and durability of the adhesive is critical because furniture is subject to constant stress. In electronics, precision application and the absence of adhesive residue are important to avoid damaging sensitive components. And in packaging, of course, the main thing is adhesion to various materials and resistance to external factors.
Sometimes, however, you come across such “special” orders. For example, someone orders adhesive tape for artistic purposes, for attaching decorative elements. Or someone uses it as a temporary fastening when carrying out some work. These needs, of course, are not so great, but they also exist. And they need to be taken into account, even if it is only a small part of total sales. But a common mistake is underestimating the role of technical characteristics. The client sees 'double-sided tape' and thinks everyone is equally good. This is far from true, different glue compositions have different properties, different adhesion to different surfaces, different heat resistance, different resistance to moisture.
In the furniture industry, adhesive tape is often used to connect various elements - panels, frames, decorative overlays. The key requirement is adhesive strength, especially under heavy loads. Here, not only the adhesion strength is important, but also the elasticity of the glue so that it does not crack when the material is deformed. For example, I have repeatedly encountered situations where clients chose too cheap adhesive tape and ended up having problems fixing the furniture. Wet cleaning, rearrangement - all this led to the elements peeling off, and we had to resort to rework.Enping Sanli Adhesive Co.,Ltd, as a manufacturer, is actively working to develop special compounds for the furniture industry that have increased strength and durability.
In addition to strength, an important factor is the compatibility of the tape with the materials from which the furniture is made. For example, when working with MDF, you need adhesive tape that adheres well to this material and does not damage its surface. When working with plywood, use tape that has sufficient adhesion and does not leave marks on the surface. In other words, you need to consider not only the material that is attached with tape, but also the material to which it is attached. Often clients do not take this into account and end up with undesirable consequences.
In the electronics industry, the requirements for double-sided tape are much higher. Accuracy of application is important here so that the components are positioned correctly. Cleanliness is important - the tape should not leave marks on the surface that could affect the operation of the device. And, of course, heat resistance is important, since electronics often operate at elevated temperatures.Enping Sanli Adhesive Co.,Ltdoffers special formulations for electronics that meet these requirements.
For example, we often use low-solvent tape to avoid the formation of adhesive residue. Adhesion to various types of plastic and metal used in electronic devices is also important. Some of our customers even order anti-static tape to prevent static electricity from damaging sensitive components. These are, of course, additional costs, but in some cases they are justified.
In the field of packagingdouble sided tapeIt is used for gluing cardboard boxes, fixing handles, and fastening decorative elements. What is important here is adhesion to various materials (cardboard, paper, plastic), heat resistance (the tape must work well at different storage and transportation temperatures) and resistance to external factors (moisture, ultraviolet radiation). It is necessary for the tape to hold not only at room temperature, but also at low temperatures in warehouses or during transportation in winter.
Many packaging clients are now switching to more environmentally friendly tape options, such as water-based tape. This is due to growing demands for environmentally friendly packaging and the desire to reduce the environmental impact. This, of course, may increase the cost of the tape a little, but it's worth it. Of course, this is not always possible, especially when working with large volumes of products. And here we have to find a balance between cost, quality and environmental friendliness.
I understand that saving is important. But it often happens that trying to save on tape leads to much greater costs in the future. Cheapdouble sided tapeusually has poor adhesion, peels off quickly, cannot withstand high loads and is not resistant to external factors. As a result, you have to redo the work, buy new tape, waste time and effort. And, of course, this can lead to financial losses.
I myself have seen such situations many times. One client bought cheap tape to secure decorative elements to a billboard. After a few days, the tape came off under the influence of sun and rain, and the entire advertisement had to be redone. Another client bought cheap tape to assemble furniture and ended up having trouble keeping the pieces in place. In both cases, if he had bought better quality tape, he would have avoided these problems.
The main problem with cheap tape is low adhesion. Poor quality glue does not stick well to the surface, peels off quickly and cannot withstand the load. This is due to the fact that cheap tape uses cheaper components and less efficient production technologies. They often use cheap polymers and solvents that do not have sufficient adhesion and are not resistant to external factors.
In addition, cheap tape often contains impurities and contaminants that can negatively affect adhesion. For example, tape may contain particles of dust, dirt, or other substances that prevent the adhesive from adhering properly to the surface. Sometimes it may even contain harmful substances that can damage the material to which the tape is attached. So if you choosedouble sided tape, it is important to pay attention to its composition and quality.
